These maps were originally derived from 1974 aerial infrared vertical photographs (1:12,000), used to identify and classify New York State's tidal wetland boundaries for regulatory purposes. The imagery was then enlarged 5 times in black and white format to produce a Cronaflex photobase map. In 1975 the enlargements were rectified on a "best fit" basis using the control from existing maps which were either engineering maps at a scale of 1:2,400 or State Department of Transportation maps at a scale of 1:24,000. Concurrent with the production of the rectified enlargement, a border sheet was constructed with pre-prepared lettering of the legend, title, credit references and the identification number of the map. The identification number (123-456) referers to the northing and easting UTM coordinates, this ID number is found at the bottom center of the raster and in the digital file name. The map border sheet was "sandwiched" with the rectified enlargement and a photographic composite produced. The maps were not subject to aerial triangulation. The maps were scanned in 2002-2003 at 400 dpi on a Contex FSC-3050 Magnum wide format scanner. Each map was then reviewed in Adobe Photoshop and color balanced. In 2005-2006 each map was geo-referenced to the 1974 tidal wetland boundary shapefile, on a "best fit" basis. Supplemental_Information: The hard copy mylar maps were used to digitize the 1974 tidal wetland shapefiles. All rasters were then geo-referenced to and checked for alignment with the 1974 tidal wetlands shapefiles, most overlay without deviation, although, because of the absence of triangiulation and ortho-rectification, some areas along map edges do not align correctly,additionally some ground features do not overlay correctly. An example of a typical problem can be found on map 694-518. Less than 1% of the maps exhibit this problem. Additionally, because of non-triangulation many of the maps do not edgematch correctly, so during these instances, shapfile lines were drawn to meet each other at the edges without consideration of ground conditions. There was no attempt to align governmental boundary lines. The protocol for alignment, in order of importance, was upland/wetlands boundaries, intratidal boundaries and then high water and SM/LZ boundaries. After several attempts other maps exhibited mis-alignment examples are 682-514 and 682-518. Maps that have undergone map changes have notations in the lower left hand corner. The 1974 shapefile, in most cases, does not reflect these changes in the digital shapefile format, therefore the raster will exhibit boundary lines that are not part of the 1974 shapefile. This condition is most evident in the Shinnecock Bay series of maps, The changes are black lines that are part of the raster and not included in the 1974 shapefile.
